Talk about the history of the company, including the move to Mount Pleasant.
“Yoj Events and Charleston Tuxedo was purchased by Semper Signature Events, which was based in downtown Charleston for years until the lease expired and the building sold.”
Why did you decide to move to Mount Pleasant and how has the change in location enhanced the business so far?
“Having parking, visibility and accessibility was a big draw to moving to Mount Pleasant on Coleman Boulevard, and it turned out to be the perfect fit. So far, we have heard numerous times how customers generally avoided going downtown and how coming to us in Mount Pleasant has been so much more convenient. The volume of calls, inquiries and bookings has increased exponentially.”
What or who inspires you each day?
“I was fortunate enough to work alongside my dad, Horst Semper, for 15 years at the Trawler Restaurant on Shem Creek. The lessons I learned were invaluable, and making decisions that he would agree with and be proud of inspires me daily.”
What challenges you?
“Reaching new heights creatively in many ways for our clients challenges me daily, and I would not trade it for anything.”
What advice do you have for other women just starting out in business?
“Be patient. Creating, owning and operating a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Show up every day — you cannot phone it in. Put your head down, work hard and keep going. I read a quote recently, but I am not sure who said it, that sums it up perfectly: ‘The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.’”
