When Lauren Owens moved to Charleston a decade ago, the art aficionado stumbled upon an opportunity to work as an apprentice at Frames Unlimited, a custom frame shop established in 1979. There she learned how to build frames and mountings — mixing her own paste, pinning, clamping and chopping angles to perfection. When the business became available in 2018, it was no surprise that Owens would take it over with pride, keeping the tone unique and sentimental.
With a degree in art and a background in the auction and gallery world, Owens uses her expertise in color theory to highlight art and heirlooms with museum quality, selecting frames and matting from the huge variety of over twenty boutique frame companies represented in her shop. Owen’s appreciation for art and its value brings expertise that allows her client’s pieces speak for themselves from the perfect frame. Whether it’s a watercolor, a screen print, an oil painting, a sketch or a family photo — if it is important to her client — it is worth framing.
A pro tip for when you stop by: bring the paint color of the wall where you’ll be hanging your art, and a photograph of the room, so Owens can build the perfect frame for your space, and bring your art to life.
