Ever find yourself beach-side, wanting to slip on something that will protect your bronzed shoulders yet still make a fashion statement? For ZAGS® founder Jennifer Horton, necessity was certainly the mother of invention. Years ago, she was on the hunt for a shawl she could easily take from day to night – one that would protect her skin and still be on trend. Unable to find just what she was looking for, Horton took matters into her own hands and crafted a lifestyle brand that is now revered by ocean-side yogis, surfers, country clubbers and ladies who lunch.
“Our family is forever in the sun, on the boat, at the pool or the beach, football games, soccer tournaments, outdoor social events – you name it. I really just needed a way to protect my kiddos and myself and still look stylish at the same time,” said Horton. “A scarf, a shawl, a blanket, a beach coverup – all of those things in one easy-to-pack and care for solution.”
Since the designs hit the market, they have been praised by publications, fashion bloggers and customers looking to transition from a day at sea to a night on the town. They’re lightweight and composed of UPF 30+ polyester. Wearing a ZAGS® UV protecting sun-wrap, you can rest easy that your skin will be safe and your fashion sense won’t be compromised. From bold purple starfish to green nautical stripes, the patterns are about as varied as the brand’s clientele. Some pieces are reminiscent of sherbet hues dispersed by a Lowcountry sunset, while others harken back to the smoky shades of a winter oyster roast.
“I draw great inspiration from places that I have traveled to with my family, as well as living life in the Lowcountry around so much beauty at every turn,” said Horton. “The ZAGS® collection is a sort of scrapbook of my heart.”
Growing up with an art teacher mother, Horton was encouraged to express herself creatively. As an undergraduate at Clemson, she studied visual arts, with a focus in painting. Later, she obtained a master’s in teaching from the University of South Carolina.
“I love using color to evoke energy,” said Horton. “Many of the ZAGS® designs are from my paintings or portions of my paintings in acrylic and watercolor.”
As for advice this mother of three would give to other moms who want to dive into the industry, Horton urges aspiring entrepreneurs to be led by passion and instinct.
“First and foremost, pray over your idea,” said Horton. “Listen to your heart of hearts and be true to yourself. Find a mentor and ask questions and be ready to learn, learn, learn!”
