Vision, desire for autonomy and determination gave Priscilla Bloedoorn, owner of Not Your Average Wings, the push to open her restaurant. Opened for a year in the heart of Summerville, this restaurant has the community running to the only main wing joint in town. “I didn’t think I was ready with how the community received me selling wings, being that health and wellness had been my prime focus in the last five years. I knew there was a need for wings in Summerville, but the overwhelming support has given us the opportunity to be the “it” place in the community, Bloedoorn reflected alongside business partner Rachel Bailey
Winning a U.S. visa lottery in 2004, Bloedoorn moved from Ghana to the states where she met her husband and birthed two children. In 2018, the military family settled back in Summerville where her husband called home, but Bloedoorn didn’t want to work for an employer. She wanted to work for herself, so she did. Bloedoorn said about that journey, “In my experience, when you go through hurdles in owning a business, it forces your hand to give up on the vision sometimes. You can’t give up. You must keep pushing. You can have no after no. You just need that one yes. You must have that determination to keep pushing, ladies.”
With over 30 flavors of wings, grits, waffles, fried okra and salads, it’s no surprise that Not Your Average Wings has already become a dining staple.
