HANDMADE IN CHARLESTON: Local designers are putting Charleston on the fashion map with their bold, handcrafted creations

Teal Heron Handmade Ring

Charleston’s fashion scene is experiencing a renaissance driven not by outsiders but by the talented women who call the Lowcountry home. From innovative sandals that fold into a purse to jewelry crafted from sustainably sourced fish leather, these local entrepreneurs are redefining what it means to create fashion with both purpose and style. Their ateliers and workshops dot the Charleston landscape, each telling a unique story of passion, craftsmanship and the entrepreneurial spirit that makes this city a hub for creative innovation. These are the women who aren’t just following trends — they’re creating them, one handcrafted piece at a time.

THE ARTISANS

1. Cassidy Caulk, Kindred LabelPhoto of a handmade bag from Kindred Label

A self-taught cobbler at age 24, Cassidy Caulk designed and engineered the first groundbreaking prototype of the folded sandal made of Italian leather for her brand, Kindred Label. Caulk said, “The idea behind Kindred Label started during my college years when I often needed a convenient, foldable sandal to switch out of my heels on the go. Noticing the absence of stylish yet functional options in the market, I saw an opportunity to create my own solution.” Peruse the chic selection at kindredlabel.com.

2. Becky Connelly, Non Disclosure Apparel

Every fashionista knows that maximizing any look starts with choosing the right lingerie. According to Becky Connelly, founder of Non Disclosure Apparel, “The patented Elli Bralette has nipple concealing petals inside the cups, setting it apart from any other bralette. It features lightweight nipple coverage without padding and is the most comfortable bra you’ll ever wear. Our customers love that our bralettes can be worn for any occasion, whether at work, a girls’ night out or just lounging at home.” Shop the options at ndapparel.com.

3. Meg Morris Hale, Tutto

Inspired by a love of the outdoor lifestyle, Meg Morris Hale went in search of the perfect classic sweater that paired effortless style and comfort with versatility. Unable to find just the right fit, Hale developed the concept for Tutto striped knits. The timeless designs include combinations such as burgundy and blush, chocolate and white, navy and coral or light blue and olive. Hale’s latest colorway is the saltwater and emerald inspired by The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection. According to Hale, the new pattern draws its shade from the sun-washed tones of the Lowcountry and the thoughtfully curated interiors of the resort at Kiawah River. 4. Andy Jahde, JahdePhoto of handmade clothing from Jade King

In 2015, leather aficionado Andy Jahde sold her car and moved to London where she studied shoemaking for that summer. A year later, she landed an apprenticeship in New York with Cole Haan. When she returned to Charleston, she launched her company, Jahde, in 2017. Her original collection included a 20-piece curation from two of her staple designs, the King collar and the Council belt bag. Focusing on custom orders, signature pieces and wholesale business, Jahde invites clients to visit her atelier where they can view the accessories and order bespoke creations. 5. Lola Okoniewski, Sugar & Lola

For Sugar & Lola’s founder, Lola Okoniewski, every piece of jewelry begins with high design in mind. The curated mix of captivating charms, natural gemstones and high-quality metal, whether 14-karat, gold-filled, sterling silver or bronze, is thoughtfully sourced from around the world. Each design has one-of-a-kind details, elevating and individualizing the collection, perfect for everyday wear.
