Talk about the history of the company.
My dad, Dr. Eddie White, opened Sewee Dental Care in 1998. At the time, he was the last business between Mount Pleasant and McClellanville! Everyone thought he was crazy for moving “out to the middle of nowhere,” but now we are in the heart of North Mount Pleasant.
When/why did you decide to go into the business you are in?
I decided to be a dentist when I was in middle school. I’ve always found teeth fascinating, and I knew I wanted to work in medicine, so dentistry was the right fit. Plus, if you know my dad, you know he is a joy to be around, and I get to hang out with him all day. I decided to be a general dentist because I really enjoy being the “primary care doctor” for the mouth, helping patients distill information from specialists and making comprehensive treatment plans people can understand. Dentistry can be so intimidating, and it’s hard to know what to do without enough education as a patient. We make sure you are fully involved in your dental care so you can make better decisions for yourself.
What or who inspires you each day?
I am most inspired by nature and spending time outdoors. I can “recharge” my batteries in an afternoon of bird watching, hiking, biking or reading in a sunny spot that will put me in a fresh mindset. We are so lucky to live in a place that offers us so many opportunities to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer.
What advice do you have for other women just starting out in business?
My best advice is to seek out those who are in a position to which you are striving, and ask a lot of good questions. Also, get a great accountant who can help take off some of the pressures of money and business decisions.
