CW: When did you decide to go into the business you are in?
“Many times in life, I think we steer toward career paths similar to those we were raised with and frequently there’s another journey along the way. Though I studied international politics at Winthrop University, once I graduated, it was real estate and commercial lending. Then I had a fabulous 20-year run with renovation consulting and design work. I have now come full-circle, back to my roots in the insurance industry. Developing ideas and programs with my incredible team gives me great satisfaction. When you work in an industry for 30-plus years, building and building, you do it every day because you like it, and something is driving you inside to push forward and be better every day.”
CW: How do you find your passion?
“Take chances, don’t miss opportunities, try new things, be brave, do what you love and the passion will surface.”
CW: How have the challenges over the past year changed you?
“I have been forced to take my not-so-hot tech skills to the next level. I love to learn new things, so I have made myself open-minded to learning and trying new technology every week. The challenges of the last year have shown us all that no matter the conditions, we can accomplish anything.”
CW: What or who inspires you?
“My hubby Sam Schirmer – he reminds me daily to relax, laugh and love life.”
CW: Tell us about how you grew up and who shaped you into the woman you are today.
“My grandparents spent a tremendous amount of time with us our entire lives. They instilled their Christian beliefs, morals and values in each of us and taught us that doing for others is where you will find joy. They taught us to ‘Let God lead.’ Both of them were one of my ultimate gifts in life.”
CW: Give us some success tips for someone just starting out in your line of work.
“No matter what industry you seek, start your day with ‘I can.’ Set short-term and long-term goals. Measure and reward yourself for your personal achievements. Believe in yourself and believe in your goals. Always put God and family first, and the rest will come.”
